Research

At The Valleys Medical Partnership, we are proud to be a research-active practice.

Participating in clinical research and disease surveillance helps to develop new treatments and medicines for the future. There are different types of research that patients can take part in.

If we invite you to take part in a study, please consider doing so.

A recent survey found that most participants report a positive experience after taking part in research studies. Read more here: Participant in research experience survey | NIHR

Research & Surveillance Centre (RCGP)

As a practice, we also contribute to Disease Surveillance, which is coordinated by the Oxford-Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Research and Surveillance Centre (RSC). They use data from health records to monitor infections and diseases in the community. Data collection is to support public health. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) use this information to detect disease outbreaks and pandemics, and evaluate vaccine effectiveness, as well as carry out ethically approved research.

The data collected is pseudonymised, meaning that information that identifies an individual is removed and replaced with a code number. This means it is not possible to identify an individual after it has been pseudonymised. This does not affect patients care or privacy.

If you wish for your information not to be used, please speak to the practice, or follow the link: https://www.nhs.uk/your-nhs-data-matters/manage-your-choice

Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD)

This practice contributes to the Clinical Practice Research Datalink. CPRD is a UK-based research service that collects anonymised patient data from general practitioner (GP) practices. The data is used to support public health and clinical studies. Primary care data are linked to a range of other health related data to provide a longitudinal, representative UK population health dataset. The data encompasses 60 million patients, including 18 million currently registered patients. More information about the CPRD can be found here: Public | CPRD
